In a nutshell:
Booooooks is A pair of augmented reality glasses that connect to your IoT devices and enhancing the experience for novel readers. Booooooks is a new form of technology that transforms regular paper books by providing users with a fun, vibrant, and engaging, immersive reading experience! And we don't want to take away the physical books from a reading experience.
Origin Story
Before watching the movie Dune, I had very high expectations. However, I was very disappointed. We thought what if when you’re reading a book on an iPad, a hologram in the story would just pop out from your screen, or you could smell the spice that controls the universe, or you can listen to the ambient sound in the book, feel the climate in the novel because your AC has responded to the plot...
before we jump in... here is an process overview
PHASE 1:
RESEARCH; OBJECTIVE; CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT;
INDUSTRY IS CHANGING
1. More accessible: compact paper books >> ebooks >> audiobooks
2. Time-saving: book summary audio service (Blinkist, Dedao)
3. More AR/VR apps launched alongside publications. Especially in children’s book
4. Widely used in Kids Story Books, Magazines, News Papers
INSIGHTS
An idea like this could transform the publishing industry by immersing readers into a fictional world.
Main focus -- enhance novels for readers by combining visual and audio aids combining both the experience of a novel and a movie into one.
OPPORTUNITIES
From the insights, we find three directions to solve this problem.
1. It's a fun read
Enhancing the boring reading experience can with multimedia and AR.
Keywords: E-reading on handheld devices; Eye-tracking; Hologram; IoT
2. Pocket Go
Reading can be more convenient with AR
Keywords: Folding screen; Pointing at an object; Information pop-up
3. Surreal Reading
Reading experience can be more immersive and interactive
Keywords: Paper books; Eye-tracking glasses; Pop-up info while reading IoT
PHASE 2
RESEARCH PRECEDENTS; IDEATION; BRANDING STRATEGY
PRECEDENT RESEARCH
Google lens / Colouring Books / Augmented Reality Puzzles / Interactive Cards / Illustrated Atlases / Augmented Reality Books / AR Magazines / AR Newspaper
THE SYSTEM
BRANDING STRATEGY
Much more than a book.
CONCEPT VIDEO + INTERFACE MOCKUP
PHASE 3
EXHIBITION DESIGN; SCENARIO; UX/UI CONCEPT
DESIGN THE EXHIBITION
DEFINE TRIGGERING WORDS FOR AR CONTENT
These highlighted words indicate some keywords that eye-tracking system pickup, then cue the smart home to change the environment.
JOURNEY MAP
MAP OUT UI IN THE SYSTEM
To better understand and communicate how the interface work in the system, we made this diagram to illustrate why we designed the interface based on physical objects instead of screens.
INTERFACE DESIGN
Since it's an AR experience, the design will not bound to a screen looking rectangle, so we designed the interface base on how the user would interact with a physical book.
PHASE 4
PROTOTYPE; EXHIBITION DESIGN; REVIEW; NEXT VERSION
PROTOTYPE
Deadline is approaching, what can we do for the year end show. With Vuforia and Unity, we can rapidly prototype the experience of the augmented reading experience, to prove the concept, and test it with intended users.
REVIEW
After testing and exhibition we ask ourselves: What’s working? What did they like about this? How can we improve? What’s next? ...
